This turned up in the garden yesterday we do get the odd one most years this is the only one that hung around long enough to get a picture and still not great despite nearly 60 shots a blackbird nearly had as it left. ian I'd be happy with that one, Ian, good shot. A scarlet tiger moth by the river Roding a couple of days ago.
I had not seen one before but the patterning on the fore wings was what caught my attention first before it showed the brilliant red hind wings as it flew.

These are quite common around London now with plenty on the wing & have bright red (or yellow) hindwings whereas Scarlet Tiger are usually earlier on the wing (May/June) & not that common yet around London, though the species is supposed to be increasing. Saw a Magpie Moth this morning-my first for a couple of years.

Yes, Aeshna it could have been. When I first saw it the wings were closed and I thought it was a Jersey Tiger. When it flew the hindwings showed bright red. All the Jersey Tigers I have seen have had more yellowy hindwings, but looking online I can see red is also common for JTs. The only camera I had with me was my phone so I needed to get close to it for a half way decent shot. In trying to do so I committed the cardinal sin of not taking a shot first and only then trying to get closer! The result was I scared it away so got nothing at all.

Last night a few moths in the trap-not ideal conditions with such a bright full moon & also little ground moisture.
Macros trapped were 3 Common Swift, Straw Underwing & a Gypsy Moth. Most of the tiny micros still to be identified.
As by-catch we had 3 Water Boatman (the canal & Brent not far away) & a couple of caddis flies.

While I was out earlier my partner was lucky enough to see a Hummingbird Hawkmoth on the Red Valerian at the front of the house. First garden record this year that I'm aware of, but many reports of them this year & I've seen a couple locally.

Turned up in Ealing at 6.30 to look at the moth trap before heading off to Warren Farm.
We had just under 30 identified species. Some signs of immigration with a Diamond-back, 6 Rush Veneer & a real favourite- a Vestal.

Just looked out of the bedroom window just before dusk & there was a Hummingbird Hawkmoth buzzing around various flowers including Rudbeckia lacinaiat & a pot Buddleja that still has a few flowers. At least the second in the garden this year, but I missed the previous one, seen by my partner.

A thoroughly miserable day today after yesterday's lovely sunshine.
Mostly stayed at home today but at dawn to Perivale Woo to inspect the traps for moths. Quite a cool night down to 5C, so low expectations.
At least 10 small micromoths- Diurnea lipsiella which are not the most exciting.
Otherwise 3 macros of 3 species & all attractive moths: Feathered Thorn, Red-green Carpet & the exquisite Merveille du Jour that looks as though it's covered in lichens- great camouflage!

Nice to see the Common Quakers & Hebrew Characters.

A busy day for me today with a moth session at dawn in a local reserve, before leading a walk elsewhere & then helping at abio-blitz at a different local site.
Ten species of moth were recorded after a cool night. Best were a couple of smart Scorched Carpet, 3 Nut Tree Tussock & aa Least Black Arches.
