A rather disappointing 24 moths of 9 species in the survey traps in the local nature reserve. Large Yellow Underwing was most common & with multiples of Willow Beauty, Snout, Box Moth, Lunar Underwing.
Best for me were Red-green Carpet & a melanic Green-brindled Crescent.

Possibly the last mothing session for the year in Walpole Park, Ealing. A warm, damp evening which yielded 36 moths of 11 species. Box Moth again was most numerous.
Best were Sallow & Deep Brown Dart.

It's a Spring Usher, Ian. I had my first moth of the year on Friday with a Mottled Umber in a toilet block at Barton Mills.

Thanks for the ID aeshna5 as for the white tailed eagle it's been talked about for the last week or so on the Lincs birders twitter page so just a short hop across the Wash. They seem to crop up now and then in the area, one day ian

According to locals it was in the area last winter too so the reckoning is it's a second winter bird.

Went to my first mothing session of the year at dawn this morning. Unlike recent evenings it had been pretty mild. We had 32 moths of 6 species with most numerous being Chestnut & a few Spring Ushers & one each of March Moth & Pale Brindled Beauty.
New for me was the micro, Acleris logiana.

A fairly mild & overcast night was perfect for a winter's night mothing & checking the traps at dawn of a local woodland nature reserve yielded a reasonable tally of 25 moths of 6 species.
Most numerous was the only micro species- Tortricodes alternella, that's been given the English name of Winter Shade.
Otherwise we had 2 Common Quaker, 2 Small Brindled Beauty, Pale Brindled Beauty, Hebrew Character & 3 Dotted Border.

Light rain but mild on my way to the mothing session at dawn. Fortunately the light rain stopped as we examined the traps. We had9 species to light- most numerous being the micro- Diurnea fagella, given the name March Tubic with over 30 of these.
Most numerous macro was Common Quaker with over 20. Next most common was Hebrew Character with also 2 Oak Beauty, Small Quaker, 3 Chestnut, Early Thorn & Brindled Pug. another micro Eriocrania semipurpurella the other micro to light.
My colleague also placed out some pheromone traps which caught over 30 Pammene giganteana which had only 2 previous records to light on the reserve, so the pheromone traps are a good way to find some other species not drawn to the light traps.

Walking along the central path through the skylark area at Warren Farm I spotted what I expected to be a small butterfly but on inspection was a very fresh Mother Shipton-one of our most distinctive moths.
