I was watching a Gatekeeper & an Eristalis hoverfly on a single Ragwort in the back garden when I spotted something else. For the first time in the garden there were at least 6 tiny Cinnabar caterpillars. I've never seen the moth in the garden, but clearly a gravid female found my plant. I usually leave a small number of this plant as it's so useful for invertebrates but only seem to have the one decent plant this year.
However was usurped as I stood by the front door & there right in front of me was a busy Hummingbird Hawkmoth, initially at an Oleander I have in a pot by the front door. It then briefly moved to a Scabious, then onto Verbena bonariensis before spending quite a few minutes on the large Buddleja. Most years I get at least one sighting, but always a magical moment!
Other garden sightings included a couple of white Water Veneers by the pond, a Mint Moth & a migrant Silver Y.

Yesterday an Uncertain just inside the front door.
Not really an insect day again today given the autumnal weather but a Jersey Tiger flew low in front of me as I walked along a path.

That information is way out of date on the status of Jersey Tiger. It's now common around London & well beyond. A good example is a mother who traps in her garden in Ware, Herts had 156 in her trap yesterday morning! I wouldn't call that rare! They are stunning moths that come in 2 colour forms (yellow or red hind wings). I've seen a couple in the garden this past week.

Mothing at dawn with 3 traps overnight in a local nature reserve. At least 35 species with male Gypsy Moths the most common.
A nice fresh Green Carpet & Light Emerald, Ruby & Jersey Tigers but my MOTD is Mocha which is new to me & the reserve.

Went to help with a moth trap that was put out last night in an Ealing Park where we had 64 moths of 33 species. Most numerous was Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing followed by Common Wainscot.
My MOTD- an exquisite micro- the Gold Triangle.

At dawn this morning I was in an Ealing Park to look at the contents of a moth trap where we had over 40 moths of 21 species. Most common was Box Moth with some melanic forms.
Highlight was a Brindled Green.
