You got a trap now aeshna or was this somewhere else? I'm nearly finished sorting mine from last Thursday night, so far 716 moths of 94 species! A very impressive tally Nige. I'm not familiar with some of the micros- an area I'm slowly working on.
No I haven't got a trap. Would like one but concerned about the neighbours.A friend of mine set a heath trap in the private LNR within Ruislip Woods + we looked at some of the moths over lunch as I was leading a joint walk for 2 natural history societies at the woods. Friday night was clear, cool + breezy so not the largest numbers though the trap wasin a sheltered spot.

Inspirational trap, nige.
On subject of neighbours, I started with homemade trap with black lightwhichcaught a few . Then I realised my neighbours security lights (and the new lamp posts) were brighter than MV lights anyway so I got a proper MV trap. I still use it near house in shelter between house shed and fence so does not shine into neighbours property and I don't think anyone. Has even noticed. Not the best spot in the garden but still quite successful.

That's a fantastic haul Nige!
Like lizb, I put my trap in a corner (between the shed and the water-butts) so it doesn't shine into the neighbour's windows. So not the best place, but it's still given me good results.
It's taken me over 5hrs to pot up and then photograph the moths I caught overnight! Don't think I'll be doing quite as well as Nige did last Thursday, but guess it will be 400+ moths and hopefully around 90 species (similar totals to last week). Just got to go through about 100 photo to ID the ones I didn't immediately recognise.

I spoke to all my neighbours when I moved here and basically said to them I was going to run it one night and then asked them the following day if any of them were bothered by it. Most said they never noticed it and those that did notice it weren't bothered. I told them to let me know if it ever bothers them and I'll sort something out. When the previous family next to us were here it shined on to their kids bedroom window so I put up some 'barriers' to block out the light a bit more Unfortunately it seems numbers have dropped when running from my garden, and this seems to coincide with the council getting rid of ALL the brambles and small bushes from out the front and side of our house. All the neighbours were pretty upset by it but they didn't seem to care much Will see what we get tonight though Nige

I had a very successful night with the trap on Saturday, as usual here in my mother's garden in Kensworth on top of the Chiltern Hills (which explans some of the chalky downland species). I had exactly 500 moths (several more escaped before I could pot them) and 107 species - that's my second highest count of moths and the highest ever number of species (the same weekend last year I had 741 moths of 102 species).
