Crossing the brook on my patch this morning it was interesting to see a Comma perched on some pondweed in the brook-no doubt getting some moisture in the very arid environment.
Hopefully the rain showing for the coming week will arrive. We've not had a drop yet this month & no more than a few showers last month.

Around Besthorpe not many to see a few whites and half a dozen or so speckled wood, seems quite for butterflies everywhere I been this year, not much but whites flying around at home the odd small tortoise shell. ian

It was a fairly cloudy am so didn't see too many butterflies on my patch walk- 3 unidentified whites, a Speckled Wood & male Common Blue.
This afternoon some pleasant warm sunshine so saw more butterflies in the garden with Large, Green-veined & at least 3 Small Whites.
The two stars though were both garden firsts for the year with a fresh Painted Lady on the Verbena & a lovely Small Copper on my patch of Common Fleabane in the back garden. The latter is less than annual in the garden, but think I also had one last year.

At Ruislip today several Green-veined Whites & Speckled Woods with BOTD a couple of fresh Small Coppers.
In the front garden while I was reading saw Small & Large White & my second female Common Blue this year in the garden, nectaring as were the whites on Verbena bonariensis.

Certainly Small Copper day at Osterley Park where I found 12 of them-quite a bumper crop. By the entrance there was some flowering Wild Clematis draped over brambles & 5 were nectaring there, though danger with a hunting Hornet. By the lake another 5 were on Common Fleabane while in the cutting garden 2 were on Early Golden Rod along with some Colletes sp bees & Green Bottles. Close to these were 2 Brown Argus on Verbena bonariensis.
Plenty of Small Whites in the vegetable garden while a couple of Green-veined near the lake.
Also a Large White & 2 Red Admiral.

First butterfly I saw today gave me a thrill- a Clouded Yellow. Only third London one I've seen this year & first on the patch. It briefly settled on a Red Clover flower.
Otherwise pretty quiet with a Small & Green-veined White, Meadow Brown, Peacock and a male & female Common Blue.
In the afternoon the garden only yielded a Small & Large White.

I'd only seen a couple of Small Whites at Warren Farm but as I went in the garden centre at Osterley I was pleased to see a Small Copper sitting on the flowers of a dark red Astrantia.
