Well the year is moving on quickly and now the sun is back (for a while) hopefully butterflies will be out in force. Saw my first Dingy Skipper of the year this afternoon.

Yesterday I was leading a walk where the sun didn't shine but still saw some target species with (all fresh apart from Dingy Skippers) 2 Small Blue, 2 male Brown Argus + 2 Glanville Fritillaries. One of the latter had emerged that morning as it sat on a Salad Burnet head. Dipped on Grizzled Skipper + Green Hairstreak due to poor weather.
Today my first Small Copper of the season + the first Red Admirals since early spring- one on the patch + the other in my garden supping nectar from Erysimum "Bowls Mauve".

I have a large wildlife area to manage for wildlife, but zero qualifications and little time. So I tend to use wits and intuition and I make lots of mistakes. Occasionally it actually works. I really like butterflies so I tend to concentrate on something I like. I was happy when I say my second Common Blue in so many years, recently. I cut different heights into the grass and plant short lines of hedges or isolated trees. The Common Blue seems to like short grass with Birdsfoot Trefoil, it is happy coincidence that I seem to have created something it likes. I now need to try and recreate this in multiple areas so that there isn't just one population. When I went to Rainham the first butterfly I saw was small + looked silvery below as it moved quickly around a small are of flowery grass. My gut feeling was it was a Brown Argus. After a minute or so of me trying to keep it in site it finally settled + yes it was a Brown Argus. It then flew up to chase off a Green-veined White off its territory.
Though there were sunny spells it was often cloudy + breezy, so not too many butterflies-4 mobile whites, a Peacock, Speckled Wood + a Holly Blue.

My butterflies of the day are a pair of Brimstones courting in the sun in my garden today. Special as first time I have had brimstones here. Hope to see more of them.

My butterfly of the day - actually seen yesterday - a number of Common Blues on Farthing Downs. And I saw a blue butterfly in my garden a couple of days ago which I guess was also a Common Blue. (another first for my garden)
