Dark Green Fritillary for me today. This one posed nicely for near the start of my walk today, at the foot of Steps Hill, Bucks. A couple of hundred yards further on I saw two more, but they were bickering amongst themselves and wouldn't pose for a photo. I also saw numerous Meadow Browns and Speckled Woods today, plus Red Admiral, Common Blue and Small Heath. I'm fairly sure I saw another Painted Lady too, but it flew off before I could be certain (orange with black wing-tips, though, but looking very 'fresh'). Lovely photo Pete of a fresh Dark Green Fritillary. I was hoping to look for some local butterflies this morning but the forecast sunshine was absent so concentrated on some overdue pruning work. In the end I had 2 brief butterfly sightings in the garden- a female Large White + a Small White. With the frequent mediocre weather (especially at weekends) combined with the June lull I think the only other butterfly I've seen this week was a Red Admiral.
Fingers crossed that next weekend is sunnier+ can get my butterfly/dragonfly fix satisfied!

I've posted photos of my first Marbled White and Ringlet of the year on the 'year list' thread, so I'll go for the first Small Tortoiseshell that I've seen for a while (well, they always make such colourful photos, don't they!). Like the others, it was at College Lake this morning. Great Kimble and College Lake 031 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

Was out looking for Duke of Burgundy this lunchtime at a new site for me. Found every other species of butterfly but DoB! BotD goes to some of the fresh looking Large Skipper looking rather nice.

Nige You're probably too late for Dukes now! I know, there was one seen there 2 days ago so thought I'd try my luck. Should've searched earlier for these as I still haven't seen one. Will have to wait til next year now! Nige

Could well be a 6-spot Burnet. The only other burnet likely in that location is Narrow-winged 5-spot.

I'll go for Small Blue today, which I saw at Ivinghoe Beacon this afternoon. I was disappointed with the number of butterflies I saw there, but I guess that it was because it was fairly cloudy. I did see a Ringlet, 2-3 Marbled White, a few Meadow Brown, 2 Small Tortoiseshell, 2 Small Heath, 2 Brimstone.
We had at least 3 Small Tortoiseshell in the garden today as well.

When I saw the forecast last night it looked very promising with sunny weather until mid afternoon so we decided to go to Denbies. As we headed south to Dorking on the train it clouded up considerably +I was feeling despondant as I had looked forward to seeing butterflies.
Fortunately once there we had some reasonable sunny spells with cloud + ended up seeing more butterflies than I had all year. For the more numerous species the numbers given will be minima but recorded:
Marbled White 112 Meadow Brown 45 Ringlet 6 Speckled Wood 1 Small Heath 40 Small/GV White 2 Brimstone 5 Small Skipper 20 Large Skipper 5 Common Blue 2 Painted Lady 1 Red Admiral 1 Comma 2 Small Tortoiseshell 2 Dark Green Fritillary 2 sightings (possibly 1 individual)
BOTD combined seeing so many Marbled Whites- some examined closely on Field Scabious + Greater Knapweed heads + the less cooperative Dark Green Fritillary.
Going home added a Holly Blue to the days tally at White City station + getting home there was a fresh Small Tortoiseshell in the garden.

Went to bookham with my 2 children today. The green opposite the stn was alive with meadow browns, small skippers, and 6 spot burnet. Had to drag ourselves away,to persue the purple Emperor.speckled wood, white admiral, and swfrittary, were quickly ticked off, then a scruffy peacock, but no pE. Walking back towards the stn along common rd,I caught a glimpse of a butterfly moving through the bracken. I grabbed my 7 year old,and walked to were I last saw it.Standing up to my waist in brambles, carrying my boy,I scanned the area, and sitting 2 feet in front of me on a sapling was an emaculate purple emperor, typically sharkfin stature just sitting there. camera phone had been stored in my pocket, and I was carrying my son.it briefly opened its wings to confirm that flash of blue, and it was gone. No photo, but job done.Got it!!!!

Weather not great for butterflies today as largely overcast + even some rain after I returned home at noon.
I was lucky to have some brief sunny interludes as I approached some large elm suckers down the lane. At the same time a mixed party of Blue + Long-tailed Tits were feeding in the crowns. Several times I had brief views of at least a couple of White-letter Hairstreaks flying at the tops but sadly didn't get one perched, As it then clouded up again I left. Hope to get more views at another good local site after work this week as it hots up!
Also today in the cloud managed 2 Small Skipper, c20 Meadow Brown, 2 Speckled Wood, a male Common Blue + 3 fresh Commas + 3 equally new Small Tortoiseshell.
