Definitely not exotic but my mammals of the day are a Grey Squirrel and a Brown Rat in the garden , both wanting to get onto the same bird feeder. Squirrel got there first and then a small boxing fight ensued. The squirrel won this morning but the rat did not seem too worried about it.

My mammal of the day is a humble hedgehog - still out and foraging this morning - Monday 21st December. Air temperatures 48.2F (9.0C) Hedgehog by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr 6:55 am (camera time is wrong!) and it was trundling around, homing in on some cat food that I'd put out a few minutes before. Very noticeable how they use scent to find their food - this one approached across the patio with it's nose extended and whiffling from side to side until the bowl of food was within eyesight. I'm still putting out both dried hedgehog food and cat food and it all disappears...with a minimum of three hedgehogs on the prowl, they get through a fair bit of grub.

Opened the curtains to discover the fox curled at the base of the tree trunk where the bird bath sits. It was still not quite light, so a very bad photo...couldn't help but thinking it was a rather damp spot to take a nap!

The Grey Squirrel turns up most days to have a good feed. It is quite small and I think it is a young one from this year's litter. It is quite feisty one and will spit and snarl from the top of the fence if the local cat is about. It was on the feeder yesterday and has just turned up for its Christmas breakfast.

Yesterday I saw two Roe Deer in a wood in the Chilterns. Later on in my walk, as I was heading back to Amersham Old Town, I saw a Fox heading straight across the middle of a huge arable field. I could only get some very distant photos, but it was carrying what looked like a pheasant in its mouth.

Much to my delight saw 6 stags yesterday. Do you know that these the first deer than I and local friends have seen all year (mean 2015). Considering just how many deer we do have. Speculation has ranged from massive culls to they have move south. Decided that they stayed on the very high ground as lower down too wet and not able to get to their usual grazing spots.

Walking along the Brent this morning I came across a bend in the river that had accumulated a hideous amount of garbage- numerous footballs, polystyrene + plastic bottles. As I peered along the wooded river a couple of Moorhens scarpered but noticed a single Brown Rat which seemed very much at home amongst all the detritus. Though I wouldn't welcome it in my garden it did look attractive here + mammal number 3 for the year.

Delighted this morning by seeing my red squirrel - Nutty, joined by another red squirrel, think probably out of desperation, deep frost and now snow.

Obviously a very contented fox Rowanberry. Last night the fox appeared on cam. I had put out a pile of food which very quickly got covered with snow. I was a bit surprised that the fox did not smell the food, what surprised me more was that it took fright at the appearance of a pine marten and did a runner. CamFox by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

Good heavens, is that a fox? With that ruff, it almost looks more like a wolf! (They were planning on reintroducing them in Scotland, weren't they? ) He is certainly well-prepared for winter. Sometimes our fox bypasses the proper dogfood for whatever is left over in the blackbird's dish...mealworms are a fox favourite, for some reason.

We do have some very large foxes, have to say when I first caught this one on cam a few months ago I thought it was an Alsatian got lost. This one is very nervous and the slightest thing sends it running. The first time it appeared it just had a quick sniff but did not eat anything before running off.
