A bird I wouldn't normally choose for BotD, but at a local farm yesterday whilst watching the cows being milked, a Feral Pigeon was tending to it's chicks, cute to see Nige

It's felt more like October than June but watching Swifts overhead while waiting for my bus made me feel more cheerful.

I'm not entirely sure of what I saw this morning...something that looked vaguely like a heron but at the same time seemed as though it were not quite large enough, (and recently a heron came regularly to raid a neighbour's fishpond, so I have seen one flying over our garden several times.) This bird looked as though it were white- the only thing it could have been, (if not a heron) would be an egret.

Sounds like it was a Little Egret Rowan- good description- a small white heron.

Went in hope of a local Golden Oriole after work today but hadn't been seen all day. Didn't see the local Tree Sparrows either. So they are my Birds-not-of-the-Day Nige

I finally replaced the blackbird's old rusting tray with a nice new one... she seems to approve.

What a phenomenal day. On Thursday some friends offered me a chance to see the Hudsonian Whimbrel + Greater Yellowlegs on the south coast. Unfortunately I couldn't get out of work but another friend wanted to go birding so I suggested going for these two.
We arrived at Pagham soon after 9 + as we reached Church Norton the bird had just flown into some long grass in the middle. Within 20 minutes somebody spotted it in flight + I just saw it drop down, but fortunately it soon took off again + for a couple of minutes flew around quite a bit showing the distinctive rump before landing over the far side.
Time to head for Titchfield. About a 20 minute walk from Titchfield village as the Bridge Street car park was full but the Greater Yellowlegs was immediately on show by the pool sleeping amongst Black-tailed Godwits. Within a minute or so it woke up + started actively walking around + feeding. After watching this beauty for 10 minutes a guy next to me said there's a Black-eared Wheatear at Acres Down, a half hour journey away in the New Forest. Within 5 minutes on site this cracking almost black +white stunner was sitting on a dead pile of branches frequently flitting down for insects. I've seen them overseas but what a stunner.
Not a day I'm going to forget in a hurry. Worked out so well I didn't go down on Thursday as I wouldn't have seen this bonus bird!

Lots of birds at Titchwell Marsh today, but I particularly enjoyed seeing House Martins flying around low to the ground and water near the Fen Hide.

My BOTD is a Melodius Warbler. This is a real rarity for where I live. It arrived a few days ago near to Birmingham Airport. I couldn't go for it until today and thankfully it stayed and was singing its heart out hen I arrived. I wonder how long it will stay there once it realises that there are no mates around. John
