I wanted a special bird to start off our "Bird of the Day" thread, and when the blackbird came for her breakfast while I happened to be sitting at the table with the camera, I knew she was perfect. She's been an inhabitant of the garden for three summers now, and is so spoiled that she sits outside the window and clucks whenever she wants feeding... prefers red grapes to just about anything else, if given a choice. I presume she has become so tame because she was not much more than a fledgling when she first arrived, (she was so speckled I mistakenly thought she was a young thrush- her mate still remains much more skittish.) I've never seen anything work as hard as she does at nest building, and she will fly into a fury when Mr. B. stops working for a bite of apple, (she'll chase him about the garden, tailfeathers spread out like a stroppy little turkey.) Her first year the poor dab lost every nest to the magpies, the next year their one fledgling disappeared the first day he left the nest, but she finally reared one last year, (well, he was around for several days, so hoping for the best.) She might be a plain little brown bird, but she's certainly a character.

Well my BOTD was a bit special today when my first 3 Swifts of the year screamed over my garden this morning.

My BotD for Saturday was a juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker on a feeder in my back garden. GSWs used to be regular visitors, but I think this was the first one I've seen in the garden this year.

Bird of the day has to be these two sparrow fledglings sunning themselves this morning, (while the sun lasted, that is... it's hailing as I'm typing this!

I had a nice surprise tonight at 8.15pm. I was looking out of my bedroom window when a Wren landed about a foot away on an unused hanging basket I had left there over the winter. It suddenly disappeared into one of the holes then flew out. It returned a few minutes later with a beak full of insects so it became obvious that it had set up a nest in there only a foot from my bedroom window. I managed to catch one photo of it through the window. Hopefully they will be succesful in raising a few chicks from it. John Wren 1896 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

Difficult to choose today, lots of birds heard, but has to be Nightingale (usually trumps most things!).

My Goldfinches. First on the feeders in the morning and last to leave at night! Bryan For me it's redpolls, always last to leave. There was one still there last night when it was already quite dark. My bird of the day is a feisty wood pigeon, who saw off a pair of magpies.

Haven't seen any Redpoll this year, Wiltshire seems to have been a bit devoid of them Did get a lovely Cuckoo this afternoon though, and my first photo of one. Also had a patch tick with a Lesser Whitethroat Nige cuckoo by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

My BotD is a male Bullfinch, which I saw this morning near Hartslock, Oxfordshire.
Later on I heard a Raven as I was walking through a wood near Goring.
