Good day for mammals today. As we approached the RSPB reserve at Rainham I scanned across the river with my scope + there were 3 Common Seals hauled up on the mud- one of them a very rusty colour.
On the reserve I looked under some refugia but no reptiles but a surprised Wood Mouse that disappeared below some grass.
MOTD though was a Water Vole I spotted below some Typha stems along a ditch. It seemed oblivious to us+ was less than 2 metres from us + the whole time we were there it just munched away at a bit of Typha. Wonderful intimate encounter!

I have been checking my trail cams and our hedgehog who regularly visits the areas under the bird feeders brought a young hog with it! Plenty of time for the little one to put weight on for winter, loads more recordings to check yet so who knows, there may be more little ones.

Our fox, (who is ordinarily a regular visitor) reappeared after an absence of nearly five days. I know that foxes will come and go as they please, but there was a fire in a garden not far away where the shed burnt to the ground, so I have been worried. He does have a great fondness for mealworms... I was so pleased to see him, I'd have happily given him the entire pot this morning!

I guess I am really lucky as I get to see 2 badgers and 3 pine martens each morning on my trail camera, and much to my delight my 1 red squirrel has started coming to collect nuts from a bowl I have put on the veranda. just wish I had more of them. I do like having a look at what you all have seen.

I'm glad they seem to be making a bit of a comeback.

I have been trawling through rather a lot of trail cam records for August and here is one of our young foxes and hedgehogs, happily eating together, seems it has been quite a regular occurrence. www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10206364345700386

As I was just getting to work today on a business park outside Huntingdon, a fox crossed the road in front of me.

Over the moon on Wednesday. Young pine marten, close view on the veranda and in daylight. What big feet! and blue eyes - I did not know that. Then to my delight Nutty appeared with two young squirrels (showing where the food was?) They were so cute and their young fir so red.

Those are great photos, Nelly... and Shirl, I love the camcord clip of the young fox and hedgehog together! Here is our fox this morning, having an appreciative sniff of the flowers, (usually he scent marks them!)

Caught a bank vole, on train camera, wandering about beneath the table on which young pine marten was eating the food I had put out. Pine marten too intent on eating and bank vole oblivious to the danger above.
