The dream is a little hidden door in the innermost and most secret recesses of the soul, opening into that cosmic night which was psyche long before there was any ego-consciousness, and which will remain psyche no matter how far our ego-consciousness extends. Dreams are the facts from which we must proceed. Carl Jung More music to feed the soul, having said that this next piece is again suggesting the story of love, and yet that certain air of sadness is ever present. Interestingly enough this next artist is considered to be one of the most accomplished pianists that ever lived, a rival to the violinist Niccolò Paganini. Franz Liszt as I mentioned in my previous post was one of the most accomplished pianists that ever lived. However, some name Sergei Rachmaninov as such. But having read just about all there is to read and taken much into consideration this next artist for me remains the greatest of all. Especially when one takes in to account his astonishing journey constrained by adversity whilst still so young. Having said that it will come as no surprise I’ve left the best to last, simply because the melody Etude Opus 10 no 3 in E major. - Tristesse was composed by my favourite classical composer Frederic Francois Chopin. However, quite a few classical works of which Tristesse is no exception have’ been given lyrics and a modern interpretation. No Other Love by Jo Stafford is but one example of Tristesse her recording becoming very popular. I have no doubt the beautiful melody including the very moving lyrics being sympathetic to the great composer’s work helped make this record so popular. I can only add the following musician’s rendition is nothing short of perfection; e.g., the amount of feeling shown holds testament to the fact. Nevertheless, the story as one would expect begins sedately after which it encounters a period of extreme turbulence. Finally resolving in warm memories ending on a note of contentment. Again, the amount of feeling shown on the part of the maestro is testament to the fact. Footnote I appreciate my valuation of Lang Lang is subjective, but it’s interesting to note the reverence shown on the part of the orchestra. Recommended reading – Lang Lang. The Ramrods made an instrumental version of this next song which together with this version are the best in my opinion. Every guitarist worth their salt must know this simple tune which was also seen as a test piece to joining a band, bearing in mind the internet didn’t exist and guitar teachers were very few and far between. Notice I’ve used the term group as opposed to band meaning something completely different back in the day. Not a trace of the screaming pop diva here, just pure sophistication with every syllable perfectly pronounced; halcyon days indeed. Meaning they don’t make female singers like this anymore. Jane Morgan sings I’ll be seeing you… I'll find you in the morning sun and when the night is new, I'll be looking at the moon but I'll be seeing you. Mind you, who can forget her definitive recording of (The Day that the Rains came Down.) www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXdfZdGU90s

I like to think of Paul McCartney as the thinking man’s musician, but unlike Leonard Cohen his lyrics are easily understood. That is apart from the title – Mamunia meaning safe haven in Arabic, loosely translated as (home is where the heart is.) Wings Mamunia www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UAKKR_Mr4o

Man is the only animal for whom his own existence is a problem which he has to solve. Erich Fromm. I don’t nominally write such a long prologue but c’est la vie it make sense to keep the little grey cells active. Non-Biblical Proverbs / idioms All that glitters isn’t gold / money is the route to all evil. Just because you don’t see something doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Only time will tell. You probably have your own favourite proverb / idiom as they can be applied to almost every situation. Here’s another proverb, (to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes) explained in just one word – empathy. Not forgetting that well- known idiom, (don’t judge a book by its cover.) The origins of proverbs are as old as time its self and used by peoples the world over simply because they can normally be relied upon. Modus operandi Just because you don’t see something doesn’t mean it isn’t there, is also a technique used by psychoanalysts to heal and aid recovery of the mind. Similarly, a great deal can be learnt about animal behaviour by analysing their actions / movements; both physically and regionally, something I religiously carry out. Loosely translated as only time will tell, which it generally does. By the same token, I’ve a habit of analysing both music and lyrics (you may have noticed.) By doing so looking into both the mind of the lyricist, composer, and listener. Having said that looking into the mind of those whom prefer progressive rock as a genre isn’t that easy, as it’s not always as you would first expect. Enter Greg Lake of King Crimson / Emerson Lake & Palmer fame. Further to that, you’ve most probably heard the following 1997 festive song many times without realising it was co-written by the progressive rock devotees Greg Lake and Peter Sinfield. As Christmas is almost upon us, here is that festive tune probably inspired by Serge Prokofiev to wit Troika, a Russian word meaning horse drawn sleigh. Although I should say the lyrics are a little deep, with rather a thought-provoking twist to the ending. However, the song its self is divided into two parts firstly that certain sense of wonder on waking seen through the eyes of a child. The second is the cynical realisation that he’s been sold a lie as he’s seen through the disguise and yet the real meaning of Christmas still holds true. The whole piece reinforced by Prokofiev’s infectious melody adding that certain feeling of joyous wonder. And the moral to the story - the Christmas we get we deserve, meaning man is fallible by his very nature.; a diplomatic way of saying man can be both very good or at he’s worse very bad. I Believe in Father Christmas They said there'll be snow at Christmas they said there'll be peace on earth hallelujah, Noel be it heaven or hell the Christmas we get we deserve. www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfY4b1NszpY

Does anyone write protests songs anymore? At least I cannot find anything new, perhaps the reason is the world has moved on, or has it. Nonetheless, this one still remains the most popular protest song of the 1960s; the lyrics speaking volumes. I particularly liked where he talks about the making of (The Eve of Destruction) and how it became such a huge hit; the interview is also to be found on Youtube. May God's blessing keep you always, may your wishes all come true, may you always do for others and let others do for you. May you build a ladder to the stars and climb on every rung, may you stay forever young. May you grow up to be righteous, may you grow up to be true, may you always know the truth and see the lights surrounding you. May you always be courageous, stand upright and be strong, and may you stay forever young. May your hands always be busy may your feet always be swift may you have a strong foundation when the winds of changes shift. May your heart always be joyful may your song always be sung and may you stay forever young… Joan Baez Forever Young www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVLyARq0n0I
