After no butterflies last month it was a delight on a beautiful spring like day to see 2 male Brimstones flying around in Barnes.

Managed 13 species of butterfly at Chobham Common yesterday with 3 new for the year. Main target was Silver-studded Blues of which we counted over 20; mainly males. We did also see one each of Holly + Common Blue.
Also new for the year were Ringlet + Small Skipper of which we saw quite a few. Also numerous were Large Skipper + Small Heath.

Today was a good butterfly day with 17 species in my area of west London. Most numerous were Meadow Browns with c300.
New for the year for me were ten Purple Hairstreaks (one came down to the mud by the brook), a male Gatekeeper, 25 Marbled Whites + 5 Small Tortoiseshells including one of the latter nectaring in my garden. I was away a lot of the spring + early June doing tours so missed many here.

Been brilliant weather for butterfly watching, though I'm getting concerned that larval food plants are beginning to shrivel as we've had no real rain for over a month + looking like little or none for at least another 2 weeks.
Seen 20 species locally over the weekend. Pleased to see 4 White Admirals yesterday-love the way they glide. Large numbers of Ringlets, Marbled Whites, Meadow Browns + Gatekeepers beginning to increase. The only Brimstone was a male nectaring on a Phlox in the garden centre + saw my first Peacock for a long time.
Purple Hairstreaks over most of the oaks + pleased to have 2 Small Tortoiseshells in my garden yesterday.
Most bizarre spectacle this morning was a male Gatekeeper attempting to copulate with a Ringlet. Maybe he was frustrated as the female Gatekeepers are yet to emerge!

19 species in the North Downs today near Dorking today. Meadow Brown was the most numerous butterfly followed by Chalkhill Blue- my BOTD. Probably about a hundred of these with mostly milky bluem males. Common Blues were also quite numerous.
Several Brimstones were enjoying the flowers of Broad-leaved Everlasting Pea as was a single Painted Lady.
