That first bird photo, of the pelican.... is just amazing. Yes: it's a big bill for the lens. I'll get my own coat.

Hmm forgive my ignorance but how much would a decent camera plus all the other lenses one would need cost please, more than 4 grand perhaps. I must admit all I have at the moment is a cannon bridge camera SX 60 it may not produce anywhere near the quality that a DSLR would but the telephoto lens it has is quite good enough for me. I hate to think what the equivalent size of lens would look like on DSLR probably 6 foot long and weigh as much as a small car! www.canon.co.uk/for_home/product_finder/cameras/digital_camera/powershot/powershot_sx60_hs/Alan

I have just had a further thought, presumably these photos have been taken by a professional photographer as well and not the average person, my little camera will also do a multitude of tasks from close up to extreme telephoto without the need to change lenses.

I think once a camera gets THIS good, I know it's beyond my technological skills anyway... it's all I can do to use the one I've got, (and I keep forgetting that I've left it on macro and then can't work out why everything is out of focus. ) ...and like you said, Alan- it'd be the size of a car, and I'd need to get a wheelbarrow to lug it all around in. Wouldn't do my back any good!

It is a fact that some people can hold a camera very steady, take my youngest son for instance he seems to be an expert whilst I need either a monopod or tripod especially at extreme telephoto. Technology seems to be taken off in leaps and bounds over the last few years and one wonders just what is going to the next thing to appear on the scene, food in pill form perhaps!

I have got a couple of m4/3 Olympus cameras including the EM5 ii. The 5 axis image stabilisation does help. I do wish I could afford that lens

A friend of mine does very well with a Minolta f8 500mm auto focus mirror lens used on a Sony a65.
