Happy (belated) New Year everyone! I might be English but never wished anyone Happy New Year until the day arrived - maybe I spent too long living in Scotland in my youth! Anyway, I haven't been around for a while and have missed my almost daily visits to WABI enormously. Although the waters in Carlisle had receded and, thankfully, our bit of Cumbria escaped the floods, underground the water (with a bit of help from Frank maybe) eventually got into BT's network and hundreds of households including us lost our landlines so no telephone and no internet access for weeks - in our case, 29 days although it felt a lot longer. The timing has caused all sorts of problems for us and although we have a mobile phone it is very old - not one of those "smart" jobbies. We were reconnected last night so today looks like being devoted to dealing with unfinished business and clearing some space in my inboxes. Alf

Welcome back Alf, and a happy new year to you too. I think we probably don't realise how much we use the net until it's gone do we?
About five years back someone knocked over the pole in the road carrying our telephone line - it was Xmas Eve - it took about a week to get it replaced, but that was a looooooong week without the internet.

Good to see you back, Alf. A few of us were concerned you might have been flooded but it is good to hear you survived unscathed.

Thanks for the welcome - there seems to have been a lot of activity on the site since my last visit - taking a while to get through all the unread posts which is great really!

Glad to see you back again, Alf! I don't think I could make it for 29 days with no internet... I'd have to trek to the nearest library and log on from there!
