Just curious as to do spiders have a life span and just drop dead? I have had a large house spider living in the bedroom for almost a year now, (become a friend) lives around the ceiling and window. Yesterday morning he was moving slowly across the carpet - which is new. When I went up in the evening he was still part way across the carpet and not moving, to my surprise he was dead. I can only think of two reasons - life span or maybe carpet had some sort of treatment at manufacture.

Hallo Nelly Dee,
Your poor spider was probably Tegenaria domestica, the Giant House spider, which has now been reclassified as Eratigena atrica. It was most likely a female and they have been known to live for up to four years. It was either coming to the end of its natural life or it could not find to sufficient food to survive or, as you say, it may have been affected by some treatment in the carpet, though I think that unlikely. I'd like to think that after having a comfortable time in your home it came to the end of its natural life.
Harold.
