Seems to be even more garden spiders than usual this year, it's difficult to walk in the garden without hitting a web, web building space is obviously at a premium, & it looks like there may be some competition going on. I've never seen a spider actively destroying another's web in order to build there. Caught these two females having a bit of a territory struggle, the top one was obviously snipping the other one's anchor-lines, and about half an hour later it had built the main stucture of it's own web in the same place ! Bit surprised to see this, thought it must be a bit dangerous for the aggressor, but I assume it's a normal behaviour in response to limited web-building hot-spots ?

There have been two spiders with their webs both built spanning the gap in the hedge in our front garden, ( right over the path to the front door- I've been having to duck under them for several weeks now!) and I'm not sure if they were actually competing, but one or the other is continuously having to rebuild her web. I keep expecting to find the postman trussed up one morning.
