Cleaning out an old water butt earlier today as there was a load of mud / rotting vegetation in the bottom - when out popped a newt! We put it in a bucket with some mud and took it over to some dark, damp vegetation (seen newts and frogs there before). It readily started to walk out of the bucket so it was no worse for it's ordeal. Not sure, but is it a smooth newt? Shirl Newt_WaterButt by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

I think it looks like a smooth newt, although I'm not very good at identifying them... I think the palmate one has a tail that is thicker from top to bottom and webbed hind feet. He's lucky you found him before winter started to set in!
