I've watched mayflies shed their exoskeleton a few times and a often long and seemingly exhausting job it seems too. I found the tiny one below performing this task in the middle of our kitchen (can I say that on this site?) floor. It completed the task within seconds of my arrival so must have been there a while and miraculously avoided the sole of someone's shoe. I had assumed that it would be a while before it had the ability or energy to fly but it took off as soon as I tried to scoop it up and move it to safety. I did eventually to catch it an move it outdoors for the remainder of its short existence. I think I've gone soft in my old age.
