The long way round to Besthorpe yesterday took me down some lanes I wouldn't normally use and rewarded with a quick dash across the road by a stoat seems the only time I see them these days ian

A couple of nights ago my partner spotted a couple of Pipistrelles over the front garden but I was asleep.
Yesterday got to see one at Warren Farm as we set our moth trap up.

It's not every day I see some wildlife I've not seen before in the UK, unless it's a fairly obscure insect. I think my last new mammal was the Beluga that was in the Thames Estuary a few years back.
Last night about a dozen of us from the local wildlife FB group got together as dusk was setting near the church along the Brent Valley Park. As we had our introduction a Fox trotted behind us & we late heard a couple more.
The mammal we were hoping to see isn't a native here but is in Europe. There's been a colony in the Chilterns for over a century after some escaped at Tring. There were rumours that they were present here in Ealing a year or so back. As it turned dark & Foxes were barking we heard our first- an Edible Dormouse-like small, cute (with large eyes) Grey Squirrels, white below & grey above. We turned on our torches & managed to find it scrambling along the branches.
As we moved along we heard more. In just over an hour I saw about 9 individuals while others were heard but not seen. These were over a relatively wide area, so obviously a very well established population of Edible Dormice here. Though there is a small zoo here they have denied they came from there, so the origins of this population are unknown. Given the numbers we found are likely to be a fraction of the population & we don't know how far they extend, it may be quite a large population.
Certainly potential prey for Tawny Owls, one of which we heard as we finished our survey. An exciting evening for sure & good to see a new mammal that I would never have expected to be found locally!

A Fox trotting off the golf course & an unfortunate dead Mole by the path in the wood. With all the dry weather they will have been having a hard time.

Yesterday a Fox standing on the path in the country park before disappearing as a cyclist moved towards it.
Later as dusk loomed there was one near my pond, on the bare ground where I'd recently cut back some Hemp Agrimony. He was scratching a lot. Though it looked healthy I'm hoping it hasn't got mange. I was pleased to see it as I've seen a Brown Rat a couple of times recently. so hoping the latter will disappear!

Good to hear a few Red Deer stags roaring today. Didn't see any conflicts but hope to be back in a week or so.

Earlier this afternoon I was watching a shrew(or shrews) dashing in and out of holes in a low stone wall at the back of the house.
I then very briefly saw something else, which at first I thought was a vole(they live in the wall too), disappear into a hole. However, this something looked too large to be a vole but a few seconds later it came out of the hole and stopped on the top of the wall for a second. Then I realised why it had looked too big - it was, I am fairly sure, a weasel - only about 15cm and I could not see any black tip.
I'm delighted as I have only seen one before.
