Small things are beautiful.
Subtitled teach your children well.
I may have mentioned the following story before, either way it’s as relevant now as it ever was…
I meet all type of people on my walks, from the oh so unpleasant to those who shall we say sparkle with good manners. On this particular occasion a young mother with two young children of whom definitely sparkled with good manners, laughter, and enthusiasm.
Please sir said the oldest of the two children, I’d put him around five or six years old. I’m looking for the Gruffalo, you won’t find him here I replied he’s a very elusive creature, laughing inside and smiling as I spoke. At this point your probably wondering why I should be asked in the first place, that’s simple to explain, how many times have you seen a man scratching around in the undergrowth dressed from top to toe in green with that certain desperate look of Abel Magwitch.
Funnily enough I recently met the same family, but this time they were looking for all things small and beautiful to which I showed the two children two adult goldfinches’ feeding their young. Look at these beautiful birds said the youngest child to her mother they’re so pretty, - “out of the mouths of babes and suckling’s.”
The youngest of the two then looked me straight in the eye and said something really unexpected, in fact it took me back quite a bit for one so young – “a good heart is hard to find.” Obviously quoting the lyrics to the Maria McKee song from her mother’s playlist no doubt. Feeling very pleased I bid them a fond farewell and left with the following thoughts as I walked on, manners, behaviour, however it’s defined begins at home.
