Every now and again in the garden I find a circle of feathers. 99% it's a pigeon caught and consumed leaving nothing but feathers, circular area around 4-5 ft diameter. No head nor beak or anything left, just feathers. On open grass area. Never found a partially consumed one.
I'd always assumed it was a fox catching a pigeon but then I've often thought fox must be doing well to catch pigeons and out in the open (can't see why they'd carry their prey into an open area). And they are not infrequent, guessing but maybe every couple of months.
But having recently started seeing a buzzard around made me wonder if these could be a buzzard catching a pigeon. Quite a lot for a buzzard to consume at one time and head, beak and skull, etc. as well. And to consume it out in the open rather than e.g. up in a tree?
Is it possible it isn't a fox maybe something a buzzard or something else could be catching? Could a buzzard be catching, starting to consume then carrying off to somewhere better (hence no head, beak, legs, etc.)?

It is most likely the Pigeon was taken by a female Sparrowhawk. I have seen this in my own garden on several occasions. It is possible the Sparrowhawk was disturbed while plucking the pigeon and flew off taking the pigeon with it. Or, all that was left were feathers. As you can see in the photograph the Sparrowhawk is surrounded by feathers and there is next to nothing left of the pigeon. The photograph was taken in June 2011. I watched it take the pigeon, strip and devour it which took about 15 or so minutes. IMG_5964 by Harold Smith, on Flickr Harold.
