Definitely a poplar.

That's interesting- I had no idea poplars could grow so large. I wish I could have taken a photo of the whole tree, but the path was narrow and through a wooded area so I wasn't able to.
Thanks for the id!

Can anyone please ID this tree? It is in my street but I only just noticed how unusual it is. The wind was howling through its branches which made me look up. Using Google, my best guess is Norway Spruce? tree4id by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

I'm still hoping someone can id this... it was making such a loud roar it sounded like the wind rushing through a forest rather than just blowing through one tree! We stopped to listen... and it wasn't even particularly windy at the time. What is it about the branches that could have caused it to create such a sound?

Any chance of better photos that show more of a close-up? Appreciate there are no lower branches which might make that tricky but I just can't see any detail here.

I'll try and do that today, Aeshna- I'll zoom in on the lower branches.

I don't know if it will help but Woodland Trust do a smartphone app "BritishTrees" that is meant to help with tree ID (if you are a smartphone user) (free). I've had it loaded on my phone for ages but not yet actually used it so I can't recommend it from any experience. But it's free and I considered it from a reputable source (Woodland Trust). www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/trees-woods-and-wildlife/british-trees/tree-id-app/Ian

As I was taking a different exit out of Perivale Park I came across a tree that looked superficially similar to this & was a species of spruce, Picea sp. This one had a few cones to confirm genus.
