I thought I'd splash out on a large enough quantity of mealworms to help out the birds during nesting and fledgling season, and found this special online... it's a company called Brown's Pet Range and they are offering a one kilo bucket for £14.99, (marked down from £22.99) They're also offering a special 10% off deal this week as well, if you used the code BACK2WORK Thought I'd let everyone know, in case anyone else is looking for mealworms in bulk! www.brownspetrange.com/collections/wildlife/products/browns-live-wild-bird-food-dried-mealworms-5-litre

I've always been told (and it was NOT experts telling me) not to put out dried mealworms once chicks have hatched. Reason I was given was that young chicks in their nests don't get to visit water so depend on water in their food (e.g. fresh juicy caterpillars/bugs) and dried mealworms given to chicks don't provide the water their food would normally contain.
Was this wrong? (if it was I'll be getting some died mealworms for my local birds whose populations seem a bit "depleted" at the moment).
Thanks Ian

That's right... I never put them out dry, I put about a handful in a mug first thing in the morning and pour water over them.
Leave them to soak for a couple of hours until they soften, and then I put them out in a mesh dish inside a caged feeder, (else the starlings hoover them up in seconds!)
