This lass set up home last night five feet up the wall of our house next to the front door. It has a rather squashed appearance - like a deflated Steatoda bipunctata (perhaps) but I don't recall seeing one like this before. Any suggestions?

You're absolutely right juju. Nuctenea umbratica - and I've got photos I've previously taken of the same species - the memory is worse than I thought! It was in a particularly vulnerable position and disappeared early yesterday leaving its egg sac behind. I suspect a bird took it.
