A while back just at the beginning of March I was walking through the woods here, the lake side half when following the footpath round I came to a stop as someone had put up a fence blocking a footpath I'd used since I was 5 or 6. Who would dare to put up such a fence in these woods? and not only was the path blocked but the fence ran the length of this half of the woods. Around 10ft in from the footpath running alongside the main road and just beyond the brambles that run alongside that path.
The fence was around 4 to 5ft tall and the had left two other footpaths open they lead to a supermarket. Except for the footpaths beyond the fence is only quite dense scrub ideal cover for the deer and foxes we get in here. My first thoughts were if say someone or their dog spooked a deer in the first half of the woods it would dash across the road a very busy road looking for cover I've seen them do it.
But upon crossing the road would hit the fence and certainly the muntjac wouldn't be able to jump it. Therefore turning them around and having to cross the road again with all the dangers that means for both deer and drivers. Also illegally blocking a longstanding footpath it's fair to say I was little pissed
Of course I knew who was responsible the local anglers it's not the first attempt they've had at trying to control peoples movements around the lake, but this fence was 60m or more away from the water and a danger to wildlife.
I walked back to lake and asked an angler if it was there doing and what was the thinking behind it? he said yes and it was to stop the rubbish blowing off the road and into the woods, also stop the kids and druggies hanging out near the lake.
BS The brambles do that I replied and there's very little rubbish anyhow, what about the deer and other wildlife.
Plus what little bit of authority anglers have here ends at the wet bit not the entire wood and you have no say who sits around the lake.
Not content to let it go I contacted my local councillor he lives nearby and had a look he couldn't see any reason for and contacted the angling club who never got back to him so after trying a second time with the same result he took it the council who knew nothing about it.
They got some half backed excuse that didn't wash and were told the to remove it.
I'm pleased to say that a walk through the wood on Thursday and the fence was gone at last
Trouble now is I may just have to go an chop back some bramble that will have grown over the path no problem though
A positive result I must say I'm surprised be way to go Lincoln City Council
