A friend sent me this link the other day Mini Forestswhich I think sounds great - I just hope they come to the UK as well! Forests the size of tennis courts sound so practicable for lots of settings... And I've just seen there's a BBC Radio 4 programme tomorrow morning at 11.30 on birdsong and sound recordists, may be worth a listen!

I have found it surprising how large trees can grow very close to each other. 8'ish years ago I needed some "screening" on part of my garden so decided a rough hedge as diverse as possible so planted, holly, wild privet, hazel, dogwood, field maple, wild cherry (and probably a few others I can't remember), all randomly mixed. I now cut it at about 3m heigh to be sort of hedge shaped but the trees were planted around 18" apart and I'm amazed how large the trunks of the tree species have become.
It's dense. Initial camera-trap isn't showing much living in it but there are nearby better environments (long large piles of prunings/wood/leaves, bramble bushes, etc.).
