Good afternoon everyone, is it possible to use a cashcam to record wildlife movements, day and night? Is twelve volts from a small bettery charger enough to power it?
Cheers Tony.

I don't know much about dashcams, Tony but found this - www.nextbase.com/en-gb/hub/what-is-a-dash-cam/As you'll see this is from a manufacturer of dashcams but I think the info is fairly general. Possible problems - the microSD card would fill up in a few hours and then start overwriting the earlier recordings, this might be able to be overcome by a bigger card but there might be a limit to the size of card a dashcam can accept, as they record all the time you could get a lot of recordings that show nothing at all. Some dashcams are much better at night than other so it might cost a fair bit to get one that would record well day and night. However, my knowledge is not great. Dave

I also know nothing about Dashcams but if designed for a dashboard inside a car then they might suffer outside particularly overnight when the dew comes. But I'd expect some of the cyclist cameras (if they are called "dashcams") to cope better with damp (as some cyclists do go out in the rain/wet roads).
Some cyclist cameras (I thought about getting one) only run for about 4 hrs and then cycle space on the card (but this is from reading as I don't have one). So as Tringa pointed out, space might be an issue (Trail Cams use PIRs to detect movement and only start recording when there is something moving in front of the camera and hence space is not (normally) an issue.
Another aspect is field of view. I'd expect dash cams to have a fairly wide field of view to make sure they catch everything and most of what they are wanted to record is moderately large whereas wildlife is often somewhat smaller and trail cams probably have narrower field of views.
Another thing I don't know is acout using a 12V device from a battery charger as a battery charger has to output more than 12V to charge the battery so it would be putting more voluts into the dashcam than it wants. I have no idea if this is an issue but certainly an aspect to check.

I don't know how a dash cam would fair outside but if you've got one going spare give it a go. On the other hand trail cams start around £40/50-ish on Amazon I've no idea how good they are but there's lots of 4 star reviews and not really a lot dearer than a low end dash cam ian
