I spent the whole evening watching, on and off, a spider spinning its web over the Lens of one of my CCTV Cameras. Talk about determination in the face of heavy wind.First the cross threads then round and round to form the web. It was perfect by the end. I now feel very guilty, after all that hard work it did, having to remove the web. I have no doubt it will be back to try again, as it obviously thinks it is an ace polace to spin a web. We have spiders always building their webs over the wing mirrors on the car. Maybe the reflection of the mirror attracts insects? I've read that if the spider is small enough it can shelter behind the mirror... but of course every time we go on the motorway it destroys the web. Often it's back within a day or so. They are very determined little creatures!

Yes I agree, spent ages again observing said spider. I did not remove its web as torrential rain and heavy wind blew in and Idid not want to get wet. However said spider was very determined, first a twig got caught in the web, it took aages trying to manouvre it away, one side of the web had blown to the side, dispite the weather it was obviously deternimed to repair the web, and succeeded. Guess who is now fascinated by the spider! Spider spinning web by Helen Skelton, on Flickr

The antics of this spider intrigues me. Last night another spider appeared on the web, they appreached each other, seemed to feel each other, intwinded legs then gripped ech other tight, looking a bit like a ball. I thought they must be mating. However, later it looked as if one spider was dragging the other up the web and it looked for all the world as it it was eating the spider. Now I am confused surely in this country our spiders do not eat each other? Unfortunately they then went out of view.

It probably was mating +it's not uncommon for the female to devour the male after this act- the ultimate sacrifice!
