The newts were out in force today, taking advantage of the sun's warmth. They appear to be outnumbering the tads at about four to one, as far as I can tell.
One of them seemed to be hunting small crustaceans... are these fresh water shrimp, or something else? I didn't see it catch any, but it was certainly interested. The shrimp was having none of it and stood its ground, waving its forelegs in self-defence.
I always get excited when I see one of the males swimming across the pond with a dorsal fin like this one... I'm fooled into mistakenly taking it for a great crested newt, but of course it isn't. Never mind- I enjoy watching our common old garden variety newts.

they look like Baetis mayfly larvae to me, not shrimp. If you look closely you can just see the 3 "tails".
