No real idea what this is, moss or lichen? It's growing out of the top of a cut off tree stump, holly I think. ian by ian robinson, on Flickr

Interesting image. Not sure what it is but not moss which would have green + doesn't look like a lichen either.

Do you think it could just be the holly sprouting? I'll take another look next time I visit the park ian

Don't know the species but mosses can produce colours from pale orange to deep red, presence and strength these colours is influenced by chemistry of the substrate and in some species low temperatures. At a guess this species is most commonly green but in this specimen chemicals in the wood are giving it this electric orange colour.
