Last night the vixen was joined by a friend... although she didn't appear to be too happy with him! A bit of 'gekkering' going on, and at one point she stood on her hind legs to give him a shove- hard enough to knock a plant pot over when he fell into it. She's half his size, but doesn't put up with any nonsense. They trotted off, with him loyally tagging along behind and her still chattering away. Photos are stills from the trail cam videos, so a bit blurry. 01 Fox Pair by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr 02 Fox Pair by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

I wish my trail cam picked up aswell as this. Are these foxes in your garden or local patch?

We're really lucky- we've had foxes regularly visit our garden over the past three years... their numbers vary, but Penny the vixen has been coming all that time. The photos I was able to get of her were never great because she usually arrives at dusk or just after, so Snowlynx and I decided to treat ourselves with a trailcam Christmas present back in December. It's been interesting seeing just how much activity there was going on that we'd had no idea about... one night, I think there was a grand total of five different foxes! That was during mating season, though- it seems to be much quieter now. Since the weather has been so cold I've not been putting the trailcam out- I'm afraid my frozen fingers will fumble and drop the camera while I'm trying to get it attached to the tripod, but once the temps go back up next week I'll start putting it out again. This is the only daylight photo I've been able to get of her... she decided to have a snooze in the sunlight one afternoon on some covered-over pallets behind out summerhouse, and I crept out and quickly snapped this. Incredible!! How amazing to have these amazing animals in your garden. I bet it must be really interesting to see how their behaviour changes and what factors influence it.
Have you found an optimum height for the trail cam? I've spend ages faffing with ours and can never seem to get it right. At the moment we've opted for a low level angle but I do wonder if higher might be better.

A good record of behaviour, Rb.
A higher position for the camera gives a better view of a wider area but I prefer a low level position and use a cheap mini tripod bought from the Bay.

Caught this fox eating something last night... there had been a dead frog by the pond who'd died in amplexus, and I meant to bury it but forgot. It was gone this morning. Ewwww. Fox Eating by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr
