A couple of useful things for sky watching - The In-The-Sky website in-the-sky.org/. I think it sets its location based on info from your PC but it can be adjusted to show what is visible from anywhere. Stellarium - stellarium.org/ It is free to for PCs and Macs (not sure if there is a charge for Android and iPhones). Dave

Also try for your phone, from Playstore, 'SKY MAP' (it's free) No matter which way you point your phone, it will show you, and tell you, what you're looking at, so whether it be night or day (anytime at all) or up or down (try pointing it to the ground..... see what you don't normally !! ) , you will always know what's there... You can change the date on it too (time travel) and see how the sky looked from your location on a particular date and time of that day (like when you were born) . You'll have to calibrate the compass.....dare I say, once in a blue moon ! , but it tells you what to do , you just move your phone about a bit and that's that ! it's brill app, do have a go with it, you'll be hooked !!! There's other apps too, like 'Sky View Free' etc

I can vouch for the usefulness of stellarium - an excellent piece of software. Problem for me now is that after moving house we are surrounded by streetlights and buildings which limit the view somewhat.
