These photos were taken on a beach in NW Scotland earlier today. My estimate of the width of each track is about 2-3 cm. The photo with the "spike" coming out of it is not that clear but the "spike" is coming out of the front of the foot, ie in the direction of travel. These could be from a dog because there were other obvious dog prints on the beach, but these looked very small and the look of the trail of prints didn't, to me, look quite right. Grateful for any ideas. Dave

Thanks for the reply, Rowanberry. I had not thought of fox because they are not that common here (well in the Gairloch area, which is a few miles from where the shots were taken). Having looked at your link and online I think you might be correct. I think they are closer to fox than anything else I have seen.

Thanks Helen. Otter might well be more likely as they were on a beach but I couldn't spot any track of webbing and they were small - smaller than an otter I think. But then, what do I know? Dave

Your last photo almost looks like a jumping or hopping motion, so could be rabbit. I could not believe the masses of rabbit holes in the sand dunes and around Bosta Iron Age Village (Lewis) when we visited. Never somehow thought of rabbits making burrows in sand dunes.
