The first fungi I've found in our new garden and probably very common. This was growing in a border covered with a thick layer of chipped and rotting bark (most of which I have now removed). The mature cap was approx 3cm across, no odour I could detect. The spore print appeared a rusty red colour. early appearance - mature - gills - Thanks Alf

This is most probably Agrocybe praecox. It has an ephemeral ring on the stem and spores mostly less than 10ยต long. A close relative is Agrocybe molesta which has larger spores and usually the veil remains attached to the cap margin (rather than as a ring on the stem).
