Probably a silly question and one which has cropped up before on WABI but why "tree" sparrows? Our previous home was surrounded by trees and there were areas of woodland nearby yet sightings of Tree Sparrows were very rare. There were lots of House Sparrows even at a time when House Sparrow numbers were said to be in decline. We move to a more urban environment with relatively few trees yet the Tree Sparrow population appears to equal, if not exceed, that of their House Sparrow cousins. What's that about? Alf

Tree sparrows are still uncommon in certain areas Alf they were also quite common here once but once their habitat changed (new housing estates) they disappeared sometime in the sixties, the pesticide era was also to blame no doubt less effective in non-agricultural areas though.
Unlike house sparrows they are also very fickle birds’ large colonies may leave the area overnight so to speak, certainly in a few years anyhow.

In some countries they can be common urban birds.
