So what do you think caused this? On frozen bog land laying water over large area. Depth of water probably only about 3-4 inches. First thought was worm casts. Then maybe water splashes from surrounding trees, but would splashes make raised brown circles? There also seems to be same sort of circles under the ice, so possibly underlying bog sending up bubbles. Whatever I was intrigued. Worm casts on ice by Helen Skelton, on Flickr

I tried googling for anything similar, but kept getting images of crop circles in the snow.
Which were interesting, but not very informative- so I'm afraid I'm not of any help, either.
Maybe they were some sort of aquatic worms that came up to the surface when their water started to freeze?

do worm casts have more air in them than normal soil? Do they float? No idea the only worm cast I have seen are those along the shore line when the tide goes out. However, these did look the same except for being brown/black, mind the water is over peat bogland.
