I cannot say I am surprised by this, I expect other raptors will be on the list next, including owls!

I'm particularly disappointed with the snares issue - clearly we have a democratically elected government that doesn't believe in democracy.

Sorry dear reader but Alan is going to go off on a bit of a tangent once again, but somehow it is all loosely relevant to the whole subject. Besides the beauty of this particular website is unlike any other in that it allows one to do so.
So having lived in the countryside all of my life I have seen the results of pole traps, gin traps, snares, poisons; baited fishing hooks, guns, and things I would rather not like to mention.
The cry of a wounded animal is one I would rather like forget too but once heard one cannot just forget, but what sort of deviant could have thought these things up I ask myself, well for a start they clearly lack empathy which interestingly enough is a main feature of one who has psychopathic tendencies / traits.
One does not have to be a raving axe murderer to be a psychopath people who hold very high positions in society or those seeking power, fame, fortune, people lacking empathy, and liars, can also be described as psychopaths. People in powerful high positions”, does that ring a bell dear reader.
A government that is trying to introduce (lean practices) in the mental health service clearly knows nothings or even cares about mental health, NHS, or any other important thing such as homes, for those who cannot afford to buy, the disabled, or our irreplaceable wildlife, but really the list goes on and on.
And so those who seek to harm any wild animal are clearly not animal lovers such as you or I but rather evil wicked people with extremely serious mental issues. They may look and act perfectly well but somehow the blood lust always takes over in the end in favour of so called sport, (blood lust) a psychopathic trait.

It is beyond me why anyone would knowingly do something that will cause an animal pain. If it is absolutely essential, and I would probably disagreee about what is "essential", to kill an animal then at least do it cleanly and quickly.

I am surprised that they are continuing the use of snares in this day and age.
To use such a trap simply for the purpose of catching an animal because it's been classed as a 'pest' is cruel (and let's be honest here...whenever I googled for info, the number one animal that came up in relation to snares being used was the fox.)
A snare is wire that will continue to tighten, cutting off the circulation- if the creature is not found quickly it will suffer a slow, agonising death...and there is no way to be certain as to what's going to step into the thing, anyway. Deer, badgers, dogs...whatever.
We've all heard the stories of animals chewing their own leg off to escape, and I can't begin to imagine how desperately painful that must be, (and I can't help but think of that hiker who was trapped in a climbing accident and cut off his own arm- that was considered to be so extreme that a film was made about it...yet animals undergo that kind of torture every day, thanks to the human race.)
It is inexcusable in this day and age to allow it to be legal to torture any living thing.
It might be useful to ask those who allowed this legislation to pass to wrap a thin piece of wire tightly around one of their fingers, and leave it for just half an hour. Then have them rethink their decision.
and just wanted to add.... Alan, what you said about "psychopath people who hold very high positions in society" is true... they did a study that showed CEOs are four times more likely to be psychopaths than the general population.
