Initially thought this looked like poo! I found something very similar but smaller a couple weeks ago in the same site. Growing in lawn right up against a brick wall. Very hard, brown - almost black and with no obvious gills or other features. Where the outer layer is damaged in digging it out, the flesh is also hard but white. A strange one to me - any ideas?

It's a species of Xylaria; probably polymorpha (Dead Mens Fingers).

Thanks Ruadh - now I've read up on it, that's exactly it. Although no obvious decaying wood where I found it, who knows what may be under the turf as the house is built on the site of an old water mill.
