What a lovely photo, such detail. Thanks Nellie, sometimes it's a shame to have to reduce the size, there's even more detail at full size. Full size crop - loses bits of the beastie though.

A Volucella zonaria on the Hemp Agrimony in my garden. Only my second sighting this year in what has been a poor season for them, perhaps in part due to low numbers of social wasps also.

Found this on the inside of the street door... first grasshopper I've seen in ages. He was released to the garden right after I took this. Grasshopper Aug2016 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

A smart looking 22-spot Ladybird sitting on a heavily mildewed leaf of Hogweed. These ladybirds feed on mildews so had found a substantial lunch!

Quite a few Hornets up Richmond Park yesterday, nice views of a Rosel's Bush-cricket but my IOD is the discovery of a new species for the park. As I was aware of a small number of records from this + last year from nearby Wimbledon Common I looked round a suitable pond for a recent colonist to the UK (starting in 2007) + Bingo! A rather easy to overlook species as it often perches up in trees + bushes, but managed to locate 3 Willow Emerald Damselflies- my first for the London area.

Very smart Pale Tussock caterpillar walking across some grass at Ruislip Woods. First time I've seen this bright yellow punk larva- so distinctive!

Pleasantly surprised to still find 2 male Southern Hawkers active at Ruislip today despite no sign of the sun.
Also a few Hornets about.

On an unseasonably warm day in London there seemed to be a plague of Harlequin Ladybirds in Battersea Park when I went in there lunch time. The kiosk for boat hire by the lake was closed but there were c200 Harlequins crawling over it with many more landing on the sunny side. I suspect they may overwinter in there + attracted by pheromones. Walking around many were flying around in all directions + sometimes landing on people. At any time I could see maybe a dozen above me. Also noticed c20 crawling over the bare part of a Yew trunk. I suspect there must have been thousands in the park.
Up to now I doubt I've seen more than a few dozen this year.
