Our poor male blackbird is still coping, despite his injured leg. He comes to the dish throughout the day, gathering beakfulls of mealworms for their chicks, (he drops half of them, and then picks them all up again. ) He is eating well, and seems bright-eyed and healthy, other than for that terribly dislocated leg. The foot appears to be shrivelling...he was able to use it a little at first, but now it seems to be completely lifeless. When he perches on a branch it hangs down, and the best he can do with it is use it as a kind of crutch. For the time being he's doing ok, (and he's been like this for two weeks now) and I am so impressed with how plucky he is. He is working so hard to keep those chicks fed! The determination and tenacity of this bird is just amazing bless his little heart, he obviously wants to pass on his genes to form another generations of heroes. Alan

Ah, that's lovely, Alan. He has become a bit of a champion as far as I'm concerned. Definitely up for 'Dad of the Year' in the bird world.

Good to hear this R.
He could be a bit slower because of the injured leg and therefore a little more vulnerable, but he looks in great shape and that is very encouraging, especially as he is feeding young which puts a lot of pressure on birds.
Fingers crossed but it looks good so far.

I don't know how large a brood they had this year but both are still hard at work, and often head off in different directions with their beaks full of mealworms...so I'm guessing there are at least two fledglings around somewhere. They are a funny pair- make little cheaping and squeaking sounds when they are both there at the same time. I wish I could get a better photo of the both of them together.
