Spotted this spider making a web on the window sill of my study window. The web silk is very thin compared with other spider webs. However, I understand the silk is extremely strong despite its size. About an hour after I had taken the photograph it had disappeared and have not seen it since. It may have been taken by a bird. I have a lot of starlings with young visiting at the moment. Harold.

I saw one of those last year, when I was staying with friends in their caravan in Cornwall.
Didn't they arrive in the UK from South America on bananas? I think I read that somewhere.

Hallo Rowenberry, The spider originated from Madeira and the Canary Islands. It entered Britain in the mid/late nineteenth century in Torquay. It is gradually spreading northwards due to milder winters. It has been recorded in California and in January 2016 it was found in Chile, the first South American record. Harold.

Ok, so it must have been a different one that I read about... thanks for that info, Harold! Then it's only recently that it's been seen in South America.
