We had a few last year, but today was the first time I've seen one this spring. I'm glad they are still about, and I'm hoping this is a pregnant female... either that, or it's just one very well-fed newt. Newt in the Pond May 2016 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

Having seen the previous posts on frogs, I'd say that's a pretty well stocked pond you've got there!

We are lucky, although I'm not sure the local amphibians would agree! I think that because there are so few ponds about, and also the stream in the woods near us is polluted with runoff and improperly plumbed in washing machines, (the council is aware of this... much hand-wringing over it, but little else) that the poor frogs and newts don't have a lot of choice. As far as I know, we might be the only wildlife pond around. A neighbour has a pond, but he keeps massive koi carp...since frog spawn is one of their favourite snacks, not many tads come out of that one alive.
