Will the oxygenating plant Elodea Crispa still produce oxygen if the stems are just floating free, or do the ends have to be 'planted' to promote root growth?
Cheers, Tony.

I believe it will still oxygenate, and it will root itself given half a chance. I used to have it in my aquarium and put some strands of it in my pond, until I was told how invasive it is... it did take over the pond pretty quickly and we got it out. Here is an article about it... www.habitas.org.uk/invasive/species.asp?item=2117If you're looking for a good oxygenating floating British native, I've always read that Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersumis) is one of the best. It floats about until it grows enough to root itself in the bottom of the pond, and it dies back in the winter but comes back in the spring... mine is already appearing beneath the surface. It's easy to thin out when it gets going- just get a rake and lift out what you don't want. It's very hardy. i.ebayimg.com/00/s/Njc0WDgwMA==/z/KF0AAOSwv0tVdqYV/$_35.JPG?set_id=880000500FI think I found mine from an aquatic plant seller on eBay several years ago.
