Below is my list of moths captured during the month of March. Due to putting the trap out in the one location at each deployment I am not bothering with individual counts although they are recorded in the daily log. There is a very good chance that the same individuals could be caught a number of times and might give a distorted picture. All I want is record of what is flying about on my plot.
Common Quaker (Orthosia cerasi) Plume moth. (Emmelina monodactyla) Chestnut. (Conistra vacinii) Oak Beauty Biston stratoria) Brindled Pug Eupithecia abbreviata) Hebrew Character (Orthosia gothica) March Moth (Alsophila aescularia) Oak Nycteoline (Nycteola revayana) (Agonopterix aranella)
Last year I was worried about the apparent lack of moths compared to previous years but the trap is revealing the normally unseen side of things. Out of the nine species caught during March, only the plume moth was already known to me and is bringing a new dimension to my study of the immediate habitat.
Incidentally, a large proportion of the moths listed appear to be directly associated with the nearby scrub Oaks with just a few requiring the normal herbaceous plants to be found on an allotment.
