Has anyone else noticed this? My feeders are getting hammered just now by finches, sparrows and starlings, which is not that unusual. But it's the tits I've noticed are coming in droves. Much more than in winter. Strangely they were going right for a peanut feeder, which went almost untouched before. I had planned to bin the contents but just didn't get round to it. I emptied it for fear of them being off and the danger of choking chicks. The birds did seem to be eating rather than taking away though. I replaced them with crumbled fatballs, which seem to be a hit with the tits too. In fact one little coal tit refused to leave as I came to top them up and only flew off when I was within touching distance of it. It then proceeded to wait patiently as I filled and was back on it pretty much as soon as I turned my back.

Our Blue Tits, Great Tits and Coal Tits are going mad on suet feasts, they are there all day until the female Great Spotted Woodpecker arrives that is - nearly forgot the jackdaws (colony across the road in a dis-used quarry and they come into the garden in the hundreds sometimes!)

It does seem busier than normal- I'm putting more out now than I did back in the winter. The moment I go outside, the sparrows start gathering on the branches above the feeders and fly down the second I hang them up again...today, they cleaned out the mealworms and suet pellets in about five minutes. The GSW has been on either the peanuts or suet log almost constantly throughout the day- He was still out there this evening at a quarter to nine, which is the latest I've ever seen him in the garden.

I agree all our birds seem desperate for food. I think the weather has a lot to do with it, There were massive of insects, and more bumbles than we have ever had, prior to nesting, now there is barely a bumble to be seen, no butterflies, amazingly very few slugs, not even any midges. I think our swallows, having repaired nest and got ready to lay, have upped and gone - probably trying to find somewhere with more food - very disappointed.
