The apples I've been putting out are proving to be very popular now... the starlings and the blackbirds are going through about one every other day. Even the jays have a nibble now and again. Jay with Apple by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

What a great photo of your Jay eating an apple, it is interesting just what species will take fruit, recently rooks have been eating our windfall apples and on one occasion even a buzzard was seen eating one, not a species that one would nominally associate with eating fruit I know.

Funny how birds seem to have different tastes across the country. I have given up trying with apples. I did an apple tree (Wab days) I have chopped them up, cut them in half, put them out old and soggy, new etc. No takers! Actually that is wrong the voles like them. Same with niger seed. just left with a mess on the ground. Hazel nuts - now squirrels and jays are supposed to just love them, but no not here, they were totally ignored and left to rot.

If you have Herring Gulls around, then just about anything can be made to disappear. My wife puts all our food waste out for the birds, (there's not much), one day there was some Calabrese left over from dinner (it was a bit too old and was bitter) so that went out on the bird table. I said to her "nothing's going to eat that" - it was there for all of two or three minutes before a Herring Gull came down and scoffed it. Chicken carcasses are probably their favourite though. The squirrels here take the Hazelnuts straight off the tree. Redcurrants! - we do have a Redcurrant bush, but in 20 years here we've never managed to get any, you can look at them and think "yes they'll be OK in a day or so", and the next day they are gone - the Thrushes and Blackbirds seem to know exactly when they are ripe.

We have loads of apple trees and I do manage to keep quite a lot of the apples over the winter months - still got some in the bottom of the fridge now, so I have a good supply for the birds when they need it. The Jackdaws tend to be rather greedy though! Out foxes enjoy them too.
