One of our local riding stables saved a big bag of horsehair for me, collected from when they groomed their horses. I hang it out in a wire basket meant to hold a giant-sized fatball, and the sparrows really do go mad over it. They've been emptying the basket everyday for the past few weeks now. The blackbird preferred the coconut flowerbasket liners I had- so much so that in the end I just gave her one of her very own, to try and stop her pulling the flowerbaskets to bits. There is now coconut fibres all over the garden. I then replaced the old, (shredded) liners with felt ones- which the bluetits greatly appreciated. What a great idea, Rowanberry. My daughters are taking horseriding lessons every week and I'm going along to get some 'fresh' air in my lungs and to watch the birdlife around the stables (nothing that unusual - a lot of pigeons and sparrows, a song thrush and some grey partridge - this last I thought was wonderful, but perhaps I'm easily impressed. I hoped for some swallows, but so far no luck).
Definitely going to get me some horsehair.
