Does anyone here use iNaturalist? It seems like a very under appreciated website for what it is. I thought I was obsessed with documenting nature but that hit a new level after discovering that site. There's a lot of joy in going out in the neighbourhood and adding plants, birds and insects to the map... But I guess there is a lot of competition. From experience it seems quicker to work with than sites like iSpot, there are more ways to work with observations, plus you can enter sightings out in the field via the phone app...

I haven't used that site but it does look interesting so may give it a go, I keep lots of records anyway e.g. every wild mammal, butterfly, birds of prey and any bird species on the red list etc so I wouldn't need to do much extra. Thanks for sharing

It just has a really nice format for looking at your trip results, garden lists, etc and what you have seen over the years. Plus you can get community input on IDs if needed, and your records go to GBIF in the end so there is scientific value.

It does look an interesting site. Perhaps I have just been unlucky during my first visit but it appears to suffer in the same way as other sites that rely on individuals posting observations. Sometimes the posting are inaccurate and sometimes difficult to believe.
I looked at the part of NW Scotland I know well and was interested to see what had been recorded for an area to the north east of Loch Maree and south of Loch Broom. All five of the records in this area are for Giant Sequoia, by the same person on the same day and within a 17 minute time frame.
Two of the observations which are 11 miles apart are within six minutes of each other. One of the other observations show what looks very much like a Sequoia close to a road. The road is the A835 and the photo was taken about 9 miles south of Ullapool but is shown on the site as being in a remote and roadless area north of Achnasheen. As the crow flies it is about 12 miles from its actual location.
Looking at the photos for the observations in this area I believe all were taken on or very close to the A835 between Braemore Junction and Ullapool, probaly close to Lael Forest, where there are quite a few Sequoias (and where it would have been possible to take the shots within 17 minutes) but the positions recorded on the site show the trees to be in remote mountain locations.
I will have another wander around this site and as I said perhaps I have just been unlucky but it is annoying to see observations that look as if they have been randonly placed.

I just had a look and honestly I can't make head or tail of it! When I asked to look at things in Scotland, I got some in England, some in the US etc. How did you manage to find a particular part of Scotland? Trying to do it another way, I asked to see Perth UK but it said it had never heard of it. I must be doing something all wrong?

On the first page there is a box which has two links. One is 'Sign Up' the other 'Explore'. Clicking on the Explore one brings up a world map which can be zoomed into.

Just realised the top banner changes automatically and sometimes the links change, there are arrows right and left so you can move it on. As long as you click on 'Explore', you'll get the world map.
