I decided to put out a berry fat square along with the insect fat squares I usually put out and much to my surprise my red squirrel - Nutty, made a real feast of it. He has his own feeders and has always ignored the insect fat squares and seed fat balls. I am going to now cut one up to put in his feeders, but am wondering if he is now desperate for protein, with all this bad weather we have been having.

As you have had some poor weather recently is your squirrel possibly going for the calories in the fat?

I think a lot of wildlife is struggling, on last nights cam I picked up fox eating the peanuts and sultanas and also a feral cat. Think badger has gone to ground as not seen for weeks. I do think wee Nutty looks a bit thin

That's really interesting you say that, Nelly, because yesterday one of my reds starting eating the muesli that I always throw up onto the shed roof, to ease congestion at the bird table. At first I thought it was just getting the bits of nut (not many, as it is a very cheap muesli!) but then I saw it was taking other pieces as well, though it was picking and choosing. I think it may have been the raisins etc. that it was after.
